· Oct. 19 is the deadline for retransmitting rejected timely filed returns. Please transmit at least two hours before the midnight deadline. The deadline is midnight IRS service center time.
· Your tax software will determine whether a return qualifies for MeF format. Most federal returns qualify. However, many state returns are filed in legacy format and will have to be mailed after Oct. 19.
· After Oct. 19 you can continue to e-file 1040 MeF returns for tax year 2011 and tax year 2010 if they qualify. 1040 Returns that do not qualify as MeF must be mailed. Business e-filing continues as usual.
Legacy e-files - transmit at least 2 hours before IRS drain time (The vast majority of returns are MeF)

· There is only one drain on Oct. 19, at 11 a.m. service center time. Please transmit returns at least two hours before drain time! Not all service centers are on Eastern Time.
· Your tax software will determine whether a return must be filed in the legacy format.
